Pigs Ancient Weapons of Biological Warfare

The Greeks and Romans really used anything they could to get ahead in the game of war †¦ and that includes using pigs in battle! They lit porkers on fire and flinging them at mighty war elephants, some of the most frightening creatures on the battlefield. The ancients might not have won the war every time (especially if PETA had been around), but war pigs helped them win the battle. Alexander the Great: No Friend to Pigs Elephants were a key part of warfare in the ancient Mediterranean and Asia.   The Carthaginians used them to attempt to conquer Rome, for one, while the Seleucid king Seleucus  I Nicator even got a monopoly on Indian elephants to use in war. According to Pausanias in his Description of Greece, â€Å"The first European to acquire elephants was Alexander, after subduing Porus and the power of the Indians ... Pyrrhus captured his beasts in the battle with Demetrius . When on this occasion, they came in sight the Romans were seized with panic, and did not believe they were animals.† But how did people combat these massive vehicles? With pigs! Apparently, Alexander the Great first learned about setting pigs on fire from an Indian ruler. Alexander fought King Porus in 326 B.C., but after Alex defeated his enemy at the Battle of the Hydaspes River, chronicled in the pseudo-historical Alexander Romance, the two became pals. When one thousand wild elephants headed towards Alexander, legend has it, Porus advised him to grab pigs and trumpets to oppose the incoming animals. Alexander made the pigs keep squealing. Along with blowing the trumpets, the sound scared the elephants off. Elephants vs. Pigs: An Eternal Battle This secret  of pigs vs. pachyderms was one that Pliny related in his Natural History. The author confessed that elephants tread under foot whole companies, and crush the men in their armor. The very least sound, however, of the grunting of the hog terrifies them: when wounded and panic-stricken, they invariably fall back, and become no less formidable for the destruction which they deal to their own side, than to their opponents.† Plutarch added, â€Å"The lion also vehemently hates the cock, and the elephant the hog; but this probably proceeds from fear; for what they fear, the same are they inclined to hate.† The Romans learned from Alexander the Great’s victories. As Aelian wrote in his On the Nature of Animals, â€Å"The elephant is frightened of rams and the squealing of pigs, and the Romans put both to use in sending the elephants of Pyrrhus of Epirus in flight, by which the Romans won a resounding victory.† When King Pyrrhus sent his army of twelve war elephants rampaging across Italy in the third century B.C., the Romans found their tactics in the farmyard. They noticed that that horned rams, torches, and pigs all freaked the elephants out †¦ so they sicced their barnyard friends on the pachyderms and won! Aelian enjoys chronicling the misadventures of pigs in war. He noted, â€Å"I have already mentioned that elephants are terribly afraid of pigs. Antigonus [II Gonatas, king of Macedonia] once besieged the city of Megara. The Macedonians coated some pigs with pitch, set them afire, and turned them loose, and the pigs, shrieking in pain and panic, went tumbling into the elephant cavalry and set the elephants in panic in turn.† Polyaenus echoed this in his   Strategems, â€Å"The pigs grunted and shrieked under the torture of the fire, and sprang forwards as hard as they could among the elephants, who broke their ranks in confusion and fright, and ran off in different directions.† Aelian agreed, â€Å"The elephants, though highly trained, would not obey orders afterward. It may be that elephants simply cannot stand pigs in general, or they are afraid of their screaming and squealing.† Stanford University classicist Adrienne Mayor suggested that these pigs, set on fire with resin, may have even been the first hybrid biological-chemical weapons in her Greek Fire, Poison Arrows Scorpion Bombs: Biological and Chemical Warfare in the Ancient World. This disaster led the elephant trainers to train their young charges with baby pigs so future generations of these war animals wouldn’t be afraid of their opponents’ battle tactics. In The Wars of Justinian, the late antique historian Procopius chronicles some porcine adventures in battle. When Khosrau I, king of Persia, besieged the Mesopotamian city of Edessa in 544 A.D., one of his war elephants nearly overpowered the enemy and got into town. Pigs ended up saving the day. â€Å"But the Romans,† wrote Procopius, â€Å"by dangling a pig from the tower, escaped the peril. As the pig was hanging there, he naturally squealed and this so irritated the elephant and stepping back little by little, withdrew.† Poor pig †¦ but lives were saved thanks to this guy. Now, if only the Romans had used them against Hannibal and his elephants. This wasn’t the end of elephants in warfare – no word on whether pigs were used often to frighten them. There was even a Year of the Elephant, 622 A.D., when a Christian king allegedly tried to invade Mecca and his battle elephant supposedly stopped before he could do so. Thousands of elephants were utilized in Indian warfare around in the eleventh century A.D. Even Emperor Akbar allegedly got 12,000 pachyderms to help him out! Thankfully, these guys have earned an honorable retirement in recent years.

Willie Loman is an ordinary man who embodies traditional American values of success. When Willy was deciding to go with his brother to look for his father he met Dave Singleman. Dave was an  ¨eighty four year old salesman who had drummed merchandise in thirty-one states and who could now simply go into his hotel room, call the buyers, and make his living in his green velvet slippers ¨ (Stanton 131).This view of a tranquil and successful career made him reconsider his decision and instead of going to Alaska he chose to be a salesman. It seems that Willy saw a â€Å"father figure† in Dave, so he followed the same path, hoping he would have the same future and the same success in the field (Stanton 133). After thirty five years of his career he saw he hasn’t accomplished the success that he wanted. He devoted his life into a career as a salesman knowing that he was good with his hands, but  ¨he possessed too much snobbery to admit that his own destiny was in a simple career as a carpenter ¨ (â€Å"Death of a Salesman†). For Willy the difference between a white collar job and a blue collar job meant a lot, but he didn’t do much to gain a white collar one and he stayed with his old job. Answers: Introduction Today industrialization is considered as a growth parameter of a country as well as a region, and the workers are considered as the cornerstone of an Industry. However, it is found that in most of the cases the workers in the industries experiences more health hazards than workers in other field are. Therefore, it is important for the company managements to take care of the health and safety of the workers or labors who are exposed to the hazardous conditions while working for their company (Hymel et al. 2011). The Occupational health and safety (OHS) or the occupational safety and health (OSH) or workplace health and safety (WHS) is a well-versed field that deals with safety, welfare and health of the people who are who are engaged in employment or work. According to WHO (World Health Organization), occupational health deals with all aspects of health and safety in the workplace and has a strong focus on primary prevention of hazards (Gnoni et al. 2013). The goal of OSH is to foster a better, healthier and safer working environment for the workers. Health and safety management of a company not only focus on the safety of a worker but also co-workers, family members, even customers who may get affected by the environment of a workplace. Workplace hazards It is the responsibility of the employers of a company to protect their workers from possible health hazards of their workplace. On the other hand, the workers have rights to know about the possible hazards of their working environment (Hughes and Ferrett 2012). There are different type workplace hazards such as biological hazards, airborne substances, noise exposure, sunlight exposure, chemical exposure and biomechanical demands. Figure 1: Different types of hazards in workplace Responsibility of the management systems The management of a company plays a key role to take care of the safety of the workers involved in this company. It is the responsibility of the management system to build up a safety organization within a company and implement proper safety rules and regulation to control the work force of a company (Zalk et al. 2010). The authority needs to perform safety and health inspections in a regular time interval and analyze job hazard analysis for an individual employee. Besides, the workplace needs to be prepared for the emergencies or accidents. The management also has to provide proper training to the workers so that they do not easily get hurt themselves. The management is bound to serve proper equipment to the workers so that they can protect themselves from the hazardous environments of the company (Hale et al. 2010). Preparing a safer place, in turn, helps the company to build their reputation and increase their work force. To prepare a safety working cycle the management needs to p repare development plan then implement those steps in the work place. The authority also needs to measure and take corrective actions, which will lead to prepare a perfect safety policy for the workers. A hazard is considered as something, which is harmful to the workers. On the other hand, a risk is considered as a blend of probability that an outcome will be found and the harshness of the harm concerned. Hazard, risk, and outcome are the three words that are used mostly in the field of work places, especially in industries. According to OSH (Occupational health and safety), "harm" can be described and divided in the different contest as harm can be caused due to different reasons in the workplace. Harm in a workplace can be divided into different types such as permanent or temporary, mental, physical, indirect or direct, or social being of workers. Such as when the workers in the industrial area forced to handle heavy objects manually, they may get hurt, which is recognized as physical hazards (Armstrong and Taylor 2014). On the other hand, biochemical and chemical hazards can take place in a workplace while handling chemical manuals without proper equipment to protection. This kind of hazards can take place in a workplace like industries and the health care centers. This biochemical or chemical hazards can be considered as permanent or temporary depending on the severity of the injury experienced by the workers. On the other hand, the workers in the industries of third world countries it is observed that most of the workers in those industrial areas are forced to work under sunlight. Exposure to noise is another problem faced by the workers in the industrial area (Elsler et al. 2010). Exposure to sunlight or in loud noises may cause health problems to the workers such as vomiting, dizziness, deafness etc. To avoid these consequences, it is important the management of the company should take proper steps to train the workers how to handle different chemicals as well as provide those proper equipment that will be helpful to protect the workers from the potential hazards of the wor kplace. Safety planning of a workplace Offering safety to the workers always showed positive feedback and company with good safety cards always attracts more works. Adequate implementation of safety plans is helpful to encourage the workers to be get involved in a work, which may have the potentiality to harm the workers' health. However, safety planning for a workplace is not an easy job to do. Preparation of safety planning includes several steps, which need some patients to implement in the working area. At first, the management needs to publish a statement that clearly showed their concern about the safety priority of the workers in the company or organization (Hughes and Ferrett 2011). Publication of this prior statement is helpful to gain the worker's confidence that the company or the organization management is concerned about their health and well-beings. Then the management authority should clarify their aim, which also needs to be a clear and precise statement stating their goal in the context of achieving worke r's safety. A specific list of objectives is also helpful to stay on the right track and begin the safety planning for an organization or a company. The objectives of the safety planning should include development of workplace environment, providing proper safety equipment to the workers, to teach the workers about the potential harm that can be caused during working in a particular environment, to provide training to the workers and staffs about how to stay safe and the duties in a medical emergency (Vinodkumar and Bhasi 2011). Then the management needs to build proper infrastructure to carry out their objectives and provide necessary safety to their staffs. In this context, the management needs to perform an assessment of risks and hazards of a particular working environment. This hazards and risks management may take some times as the procedure includes several steps such as interviewing the workers about the accidents they faced during their working period. The management also n eeds to check and find if the organization has proper equipment for the safety of workers, find out if the workers have the proper training to handle the hazardous situation or can handle chemicals that are corrosive and able to cause biohazards, etc. Then the management needs to put proper preventions to eliminate the potential health hazards. After the identification of the hazards, the management should conduct a risk assessment and analyze the result in a proper way (Granerud and Rocha 2011). The last step that can be taken by the management body is to monitor the implementation of safety procedures and rule. The proper monitoring and review will be helpful to find out further loop holes in the safety system implemented for the workers. Figure 3: Occupational health safety plan However, it is found that apart from all types of hazards mentioned and discussed above, there is another emerging health risk is emerging among the workers and currently considered as the top of the problem lists of a company or an organization. The emerging concern is the psychological risks experienced by the workers in a working place (Bond, Tuckey and Dollard 2010). In most of the cases, it is observed that the workers fainted in their work place due to losing their nerve control. According to the researchers, the reason behind this health issue in a work place is the psychological pressure experienced by the workers or staff in a certain work place (Nakao 2010). However, the psychological condition varies from person to person. Therefore, to resolve this problem the management authority of a company or an organization needs to perform a psychological assessment of their workers or staffs by a professional psychiatrist and evaluate the psychological compatibility of a worker or staff within the company. Benefits of health and safety management in a work place From the history of severe accidents took place in the industries it can be learned the health and safety should be considered with priority in a workplace. From the previous researches it is observed that no matter how big or small the business is, the authority needs to manage the safety of the workers (Locke and Romis 2012). The health and safety issue should be considered by management as their responsibility, not as their burden. In most of the cases, it is recognized that the workers who feel safe and have a welcoming environment in their workplace they feel inspired to work in that place and try to engage their friends and families in the same work place, which is certainly a beneficial factor for the growth of a company or an organization. Managing safety in the workplace is not only beneficial for the workers, but the company is also benefited. On the other hand, the numbers of industries are growing day by day. Therefore, if a company or an organization fails to meet the sa fety demand of the workers, then that may have the potentiality to harm the workers concentration (Goetsch 2013). The benefits of the implementation of safety and health can be experienced by a company is as follows- The company or the organization will be able to have a happy, healthy and motivated team. The safety enhancement can also enhance the profitability and the performance of the workers. This step can be proved as beneficial to achieve the liability insurance based on the preferential rates. Extra safety in the workplace can ensure the reduction of sick leave. Extra safety in the workplace can ensure the reduction of employee turnover. The workers will have peace of mind and will be encouraged to work with their best. Extra safety can also be proved as beneficial for the company or an organization to grow their reputation. The company will not face any legislation problems in the context of violating rules and not taking care of the workers safety. Challenges to implementing proper health and safety management in a workplace The implementation of health and safety of the patients are necessary; however it is found that most of that company faces different difficulties while implementing the safety process for the workers. It is observed that in most of the cases the small business sectors or growing companies face difficulties to ensure their workers safety due to the lack of experience and the shortage of resources (Santos et al. 2013). Therefore, they fail to offer adequate safety to the workers and attract them to work for their companies or organizations. On the other hand, the bigger industries also face difficulties regarding the health and safety of their workers. It is noticed that larger MNC companies have more than one branches and the authority management experience difficulties to control of the branches, which leads to the negligence of the health and safety of the workers and staffs within the company (Nahrgang, Morgeson and Hofmann 2011). To resolve this problem, the bigger companies need to assess health and safety condition of the different branches separately and evaluate the condition of the workers yearly as well as providing them proper training to keep themselves safe. The current health and safety acts and their application in a work place environment From the previous researches, it is observed that the practice of occupational safety and health vary within different nations. Every nation has their own regulation, incentives, legislation, policies and enforcement for compliance (Salvendy 2012). Therefore, sometimes it becomes difficult for the international companies to maintain the safety rules in their different branches of different countries. From researches, it is found that Italy has the highest number if full-time OSH inspectors per one million full-time employees (Goetsch 2011). The health and safety policies of different countries are considered as one of the most important criteria of the development of a country. Conclusion The health and safety are not only important or beneficial for the employees within a company but also, in turn, helps in the growth of a company. The safety in workplace encourages the employees more to give their best for the company. On the other hand, from the above discussion it can be said the implementation of health and safety rules may be essential for the company but it is indeed a time-consuming process and full of difficulties. "Mississippi" opens with outrage of hatred and massive of violence to stop voter registration drive and any change in the Mississippi state. The citizens of US can identify that had a horrible history on fighting for equality, especially in the South area of Mississippi. Mississippi take place in the civil right movement around 1962 til 1964 for it people and land to integrated and welcome the rest of the America. To change Mississippi and it white southern, they would risk beatings, arrest, and killing their lives. Many states in the US have had their share of discrimination, but Mississippi has by far been the worst. In 1954 the citizens council was established in the delta, the northwest section of the state where blacks outnumbered whites. The council purpose was to preserve the white political power by opposing integration. Banker, politicians and ow ner of businesses in the citizen council throughout the south and would punished people who supported integration or black voting rights which foreclosing mortgages, firing workers, or refusing loans to frames. Also use they influence to put through laws that would insure continues white domination. However the center of Mississippi struggle for power due to the black vote. In some Counties black would outnumbered the white vote four to one, which that be a pretty huge record in today generation. In 1962, blacks were not allow to registered in many counties. Black was being put off the plantations, threatened to put them in jails, and some would even be murdered just because they wanted to register to vote and stop any kind of blacks politician activity which made registration more difficult. As the struggle of voting right escalated in the delta, tension build in Jackson Mississippi where the state capital and the last stop of the freedom rides in 1961. Medgar Ever s, the leader of NAACP state field secretary who organized a boycott of downtown businesses in Jackson, Mississippi capital as part of the fight against segregation. He also help supported James Meredith during the battle to integrate the university of Mississippi to enroll. Medgar Evers has been assassinated in front of his driveway soon he got home. The sad thing is the police would even attack the black southern at Medgar funeral just to get them off the street and stop marching and making a big crowd for his funeral. His assassination motivated Bob Moses, who field director of the SNCC, to join local activists in a high-risk voter registration drive. Along with activists from the CORE and SNCC, Moses, announced plans for an interracial campaign called "Freedom Summer". Three man from Freedom summer Andrew Goodman, James Chaney, and Michael Schweitzer went to go investigate the burning of black Methodist church that had been the scene of civil right meeting just week befor e it was burn down. A Deputy sheriff stop the three man outside the town by Philadelphia and was release that night. With in days, they disappeared and went to national news. They was found in an "Earthen Damn", as the video showed, along with thirteen other bodies. Segregationists in Mississippi were so impassioned against blacks receiving an education or the right to vote, they literary to drastic measures against their own people, which were a handful of whites that had sympathy for blacks. Mississippi still wasn't at peace! The black of Mississippi created they own party known as The National Democratic Party, because they would get literacy test or oral exam that created a way for black to black and reject them for voting. This made blacks want to protest this allegation above the state because now that integration had been achieved so much so far, they were now citizens which meant they had the right to vote as much as any white person did. They march to the convention they were denied of being able to sit in the ceremony due to discrimination but was offered for just two people may sit in. They declined that offer and felt that they didn't march all the way to be offered only two seats. In 1965 they finally granted the right to have a vote,

Honest Iago (Othello) essays In William Shakespeares Othello, there were many characters that played important roles in telling this story, but perhaps none as important as the character Iago. Iago presented himself as faithful and trustworthy, but underneath lied deception and betrayal. Three characteristics attributed best to his personality, Iagos motivation, his honesty, and his self-esteem. Discussions of Iago's reasons for his hatred of Othello often begin with the fact that in choosing a lieutenant, Othello passed over Iago in favor of Cassio, but Iago may have hated Othello even before that. Roderigo opens the play by exclaiming to Iago, "Tush! Never tell me; I take it much unkindly that thou, Iago, who hast had my purse As if the strings were thine, shouldst know of this. The "this" is the elopement of Othello and Desdemona. Roderigo has been giving Iago money to help him into Desdemona's favor, and he assumes that Iago knew about the elopement. Iago didn't know, which must have been embarrassing. Iago tells Roderigo that the elopement was a surprise, and Roderigo replies, "Thou told'st me thou didst hold him in thy hate". Then Iago tells Roderigo about being passed over for promotion. So Iago must have told Roderigo of his hatred for Othello before this, and maybe before he was passed over for promotion. If it was earlier that Iago told Roderigo that he hated Othe llo, that could have been part of Iago's scam, but it also could have been the truth.. After Othello has left for Cyprus, Iago has a soliloquy in which he says that he hates Othello, "And it is thought abroad, that 'twixt my sheets He has done my office". "Abroad" means "everywhere," and Iago's "office" (function) between his sheets is to have sex with his wife. Iago is saying that everyone thinks that Othello is having an affair with Iago's wife. The rest of the play makes it clear that none of this is true; Othello and Iago's wife are not even vaguely intereste...

A Simple Translation of the Happy Birthday Song To start off simply, lets learn how to sing the basic Happy Birthday song in German. Mitchell's Who Has Seen the Wind By Rodrigo Goller Through the brilliantly written book Who Has Seen the Wind, Mitchell is able to very effectively describe the tale of one boy and his growth on the Saskatchewan prairie. Brian's childhood revolves around aspects of everyday life, and in it he attempts to explain that which has evaded and mystified even the great minds of our times: the meaning of life. He is able to somewhat understand the meaning of life though his experiences with birth, particularly that of a pigeon, and a rabbit. His up-close-in-your-face learning of death, at an early age, when his dog, and subsequently his father dies. Lastly Brian's realization that it's all just sensations, and feelings complete his search for the meaning of life. Early in his life, Brian has many experiences with birth. The first of these comes to him at an early age when he sees newborn pigeons. When his father explains how these pigeons were made, Brian understands that birth is the beginning of life. Four years later, a similar conversation comes up when Brian asks his father how rabbits are born. With this new found knowledge, Brian also sees another newborn. But this time it was a two-headed calf, who dies at birth. Because of this, Brian comes to the realization that "God isn't very considerate"(166), for sometimes he lets things like the two headed cow come into this world, only to suffer and then die. The Second instance in which Brian is confronted with the meaning of life, comes to him when he sees death, and asks himself why. When Brian's pigeon died, he asked his father why it had happened. "Why?" said Brian. "It happens to things," his father said. "Why does it happen to things?" He turned up his face to his father, cheeks stained with drying tears. "That's the way they end up." Brian looked down at the baby pigeon in his hand. "It was an egg. Now it's stopped." "Yes Spalpeen, it's stopped." (56) Although this was hard for Brian to face, he was once again confronted with death. This second time, his dog Jappy dies crushed by a carriage of horses as "the front wheels of the dray missed Jappy. The hind ones did not. A shrill and agonized cry arose." (175) As Brian stood by, not able to help his dog, Brian "knew that this lifeless thing [ once had lived, but now ] his dog was dead,"(176) and that there was nothing he could ever do to bring Jappy back.

Community: Sharing One Skin

The Okanagan people, also spelled Okanogan, are a First Nations and Native American people whose traditional territory spans the U. S. -Canada boundary in Washington state and British Columbia. (Wiki, 2011) Known in their own language as the Syilx, they are part of the Interior Salish ethnological and linguistic groupings, the Okanagan are closely related to the Spokan, Sinixt, Nez Perce, Pend Oreille, Shuswap and Nlaka'pamux peoples in the same region. Wiki, 2011) When the Oregon Treaty partitioned the Pacific Northwest in 1846, the portion of the tribe remaining in what became Washington Territory reorganized under Chief Tonasket as a separate group from the majority of the Okanagans, whose communities remain in Canada. (Wiki, 2011) The Okanagan Tribal Alliance, however, also incorporates the American branch of the Okanagans, who are part of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville, a multi-tribal government in Washington State. Wiki, 2011) The bounds of Okanagan territory are roughly the Basin of Okanagan Lake and the Okanagan River, plus the basin of the Similkameen River to the west of the Okanagan valley, and some of the uppermost valley of the Nicola River. (Wiki, 2011) The various Okanagan communities in British Columbia and Washington form the Okanagan Nation Alliance, a border-spanning organization which includes American-side Okanogans resident in the Colville Indian Reservation, where the Okanagan people are sometimes known as Colvilles. Wiki, 2011) A group of Okanagan people in the Nicola Valley, which is at the northwestern perimeter of Okanagan territory, are known in their dialect as the Spaxomin, and are joint members in a historic alliance with neighboring communities of the Nlaka'pamux in the region known as the Nicola Country, which is named after the 19th Century chief who founded the alliance, Nicola. (Wiki, 2011) This alliance today is manifested in the Nicola Tribal Association. As in the reading, you can imagine how spiritual and well-being play a huge role in their culture. Every word in their ulture has a very important meaning for their way of life. Jeannette Armstrong refers to her culture and the word â€Å"Okanagan† in a lot of deep and emotional depth. Armstrong explains the word Okanagan comes from a whole understanding of what they are as human beings. They can identify each other through that word in their interaction, prayer, and they identify there selves as human as well, different from birds trees and animals. The first part of the word refers to the physical realm. The second part of the word refers to the dream or the dream state, but Okanagan doesn’t precisely mean â€Å"dream. It actually means â€Å"the unseen part of our existence as human beings. † They are dream memory and imagination. The third part of the word means that if you take a number of strands, hair, or twine, place them together and then rub your hands and bind them together, they become one strand. Use this thought symbolically when you make a rope, twine, or weave a basket. They are tied into a part of everything. â€Å"I know my position and my responsibilities for that specific location and geographic area, which is how I introduce myself. The Okanagan people identify there selves as four main capacities that operate together: the physical self, the emotional self, the thinking-intellectual self, and the spiritual self. The Okanagan people teach that each person is born into a family and a community. No person is born isolated from those two things. As an Okanagan you are automatically accepted. You belong. You are them. Wouldn’t this be nice in our current society here in the U. S. The Okanagan refer to relationships with others using a word that means â€Å"our one skin. This means that they share more than a place; they share a physical tie that is uniquely human, that the many that became before the Okanagan and the many ahead of the Okanagan share their flesh. Community comes first, then family and finally the individual. This is interesting to me. Do you think we as a population have this line of thinking? I would have to say a big percent of us think of ourselves in this society. Indigenous people, not long removed from their cooperative, self-sustaining lifestyles on their lands do not survive well in this atmosphere of aggression and dispassion. The Okanagan word they have for extended family is translated as â€Å"sharing one skin. † The concept refers to blood ties within community and extends the instinct to protect our individual selves to all who share the same skin. Armstrong knows how powerful the solidarity is of peoples bound together by land, blood, and love. This is the largest threat to interests wanting to secure control of lands and resources that have been passed on in a healthy condition from generation to generation of families. Armstrong goes on to saying she is pessimistic about changes happening; the increase of crimes, worldwide disasters, total anarchy, and the possible increase of stateless oligarchies; borders are disappearing, and true sustainable economies are crumbling. However, she has learned that crisis can help build community so that it can face the crisis itself. Since time immemorial, the history of the Okanagan began, long before the arrival of the Europeans. They are the Syilx-speaking people – the original inhabitants of a vast and beautiful territory that encompasses forests, grasslands, lakes and desert. For thousands of years, the Okanagan people were self-reliant and well provided for through their own ingenuity and use of the land and nature. They lived united as a nation with a whole economy, travelling the breadth and depth of their territory, hunting and fishing, growing and harvesting, crafting and trading to meet their needs. Since reading this chapter of the Okanagan people, I have learned a lot about these very fascinating people. I also believe if every culture was like the Okanagan people, our planet would be a much peaceful, spiritual, and well respected place.

Gender Bashing Essays - Gender Studies, Gender, Human Behavior Gender Bashing The Mens Right Movement: Male is Not a Four-Letter Word 11/22/00 Jack Kammers article seeks to point out that negative aspects have stemmed from the growing womens liberation movement. This article does a good job bringing to light the anti-male feelings that are sometimes associated with the word feminism. However, it does not really have a concrete basis that supports this authors opinions. Kammers article does share one concept common among some of the other critiques I have read on this man vs. women phenomenon. That is, without a factual base they tend to sound like simple complaints. I feel that articles such as these tend to take attention off of real problems that are embedded in our society. They also lead other reader to perceive the whole subject as a joke rather than a social science seeking solutions to real problems. Kammer does take the time to include some statistics on the many ways a mans life is worse than that of a women, but these can be quickly thrown out. For example, women have typically not been allowed to work in death pr ofessions. I am sure that as our society grows everyone will have an equal chance at these wonderful jobs. I found it appalling that he even objected to differential treatment of children in hostage situations. I have shared some of the same feelings that Kramer describes, but I tend to ignore those as just differences of opinion or an ignorant person speaking to quickly. His use of the media portraying men as secret admirer and blood brother to the gang rapist is useless. The media will do anything to sell their product. That is something we can all agree on. We as a society are the police force that must control the media. Refuse to buy their product and they will change. I agree with Krammer in that many feminists tend to focus on mens shortcomings as a way to further their cause. He does go a little far in using comics as an example of zapping our cultures male energy. This is a large problem that is detrimental to a lot of arguments present today. (Look at the elections.) Rathe r than seeking a solution that will bring one side up to meet the other these people hope to bash the other side down. I have not heard of the silent crisis facing men, but I think we can all agree that hitting is bad or we may have to revert back to kindergarten to learn the golden rule. Finally I will leave you with one thing my mother taught me long ago. Excuse my French, but it coincides with the title. Assholes are everywhere; they know no gender, color, shape, position, etc. Once a person realizes this and does not count the whole group, whatever it may be, off it makes a whole lot easier to ignore them. What is APR, exactly, and why is it important when taking out a loan or choosing a credit card? This guide will tell you everything you need to know about annual percentage rate and how you can use it to understand the annual costs of a loan or credit line. To start, let’s establish a working definition of APR. What Is APR? What is APR? What does APR stand for? APR stands for annual percentage rate, and it tells you the total amount of interest and fees you’ll pay each year on borrowed money. It’s a more comprehensive value than interest rate, and it’s meant to help you compare loans and credit cards on a standardized basis. APR is presented as a percentage of the total amount borrowed, or the principal. That being said, APR works differently on loans than it does on credit cards. Let’s take a closer look at both, starting with loans. How Does APR Work on Loans and Mortgages? On a loan or mortgage, APR tells you to the total amount of interest and fees you’ll pay each year. The types of fees depend on the type of loan. On a personal loan, for instance, a common additional fee is an origination fee. On a home loan, the main additional fee is closing costs. If your loan or mortgage doesn’t have any fees, then the APR will equal the annual interest rate. Let’s say you borrow $100,000 at a 5% interest rate on a 30-year fixed rate mortgage. You pay $1,000 in closing costs. Your APR, then, is 5.1% (interest rate + closing costs, as a percentage of the principal). You would pay $5.10 each year for every $100 you borrowed. APR includes closing costs, so it’s a more realistic representation of your long-term costs than the annual interest rate is. Because of the Truth in Lending Act of 1968, lenders must calculate loan APR in the same way. This consistency allows you to compare offers and clearly see your long-terms costs. APR gives customers a quick and easy way to compare the terms of loans or mortgages on an apples-to-apples basis. By knowing the APR, you can use an APR calculator to calculate your monthly payments and figure out how much you’ll end up paying in fees and interests. Usually, a lower APR means you’ll spend less money over the long term. To see why, consider the example of a $200,000 mortgage below with two loan APRs that differ by just a few percentage points. Thanks to the 1968 Truth in Lending Act, all lenders must calculate APR in the same way. Examples of APR on a 30-Year Mortgage Let’s consider two scenarios using a $200,000 mortgage. In the first scenario, you get a 5.5% APR on a 30-year mortgage. In the second, you manage to get just a 5.2% APR over 30 years. By comparing the two rates, you can see how much money you save in the long run with an APR that’s only slightly lower than another one. Scenario 1: $200k Mortgage With a 5.5% APR Using Bankrate’s APR calculator, let’s consider a $200,000 mortgage over a 30-year term with a 5.5% APR. To pay off this mortgage over 30 years, you’d have a monthly payment of $1,135.58. After 30 years, you’d end up paying a total of $408,807. Since you initially took out $200,000, this means you’d end up paying $208,807 in interest and other fees. Scenario 2: $200k Mortgage With a 5.2% APR What if your APR was a bit lower, say 5.2%? How much would you save in the long run? With a 5.2% APR on a $200,000 loan, you’d pay $1,098.22 a month for 30 years for a total of $395,361. Your additional costs would add up to $195,361 - a large amount, but significantly lower than the costs incurred with a 5.5% APR. You would pay $13,446 less on a $200k, 30-year mortgage with a 5.2% APR than you would with a 5.5% APR. As you can see, getting a mortgage with a slightly lower APR can save you a significant amount of money in the long run. When you're shopping for a mortgage, you should compare offers to get the best deal. Now that you have a sense of how APR works on a loan or mortgage, let’s look closer at how annual percentage rates work on credit cards. When you're choosing a 30-year mortgage, remember that a difference of just one or two percentage points in an APR can make a big difference in your long-term costs. How Does APR Work on Credit Cards? When you look at a credit card, you’ll see several APRs. Credit cards have different APR for different types of transactions, like one for making purchases and another for transferring cash. For most people, the APR related to making purchases is the most important rate. On credit cards, APRs don’t typically include additional fees related to cash advances or late payments. Rather, they reflect the daily periodic rate, or the interest that’s calculated on your account each and every day, over the entire year. If you want to know your daily periodic rate, then you can simply take the APR and divide it by 365. How do credit cards come up with APR? They use the U.S. prime rate and then add their own margin. For instance, the prime rate could be 5% and the issuer could charge a 12% margin. The APR, then, would be 17%. APR on a credit card could stay the same from year to year, or it could fluctuate along with the U.S. prime rate. APRs that change are called floating or variable APRs. Your APR may also depend on your creditworthiness, as you’ll see in the example below. People with higher credit scores get a lower APR, and people with lower credit scores get a higher APR. Credit card companies may also offer promotional APRs when you open a new account. You could get 0% APR on purchases for the first year. After that promotional period, the APR would return to the normal rate. While you’ll see a lot of promotions regarding APR from credit card companies, you should keep in mind that APR may not matter. In fact, it shouldn’t even be a factor for many people. Read on to learn why. Are you making a purchase? Transferring cash? A credit card usually has several APRs, one for each kind of transaction. APR on Credit Cards: Does It Matter? If you pay off your full credit card balance every month, then you will never have to pay interest. For all intents and purposes, your APR is always 0%. To use a credit card responsibly, you should always pay off your full balance every month. Credit card interest rates are high, and carrying a balance is one of the quickest ways to get into debt. If you’re spending more than you can afford to pay off within the month, then you need to step back, make a budget, and take steps to control your personal finances. If you’re using a credit card well, then the promotional and regular APR offers should not matter. Instead, you can choose a credit card based on other perks, like cash back and travel points. Speaking of travel rewards, let’s look at one of the best cards for travel points, the Chase Sapphire card, to get a sense of its various APR structures. If you pay off your full credit card balance every month, then your purchase APR will be 0%. Notice how it offers a range of rates, based on your â€Å"creditworthiness.† The first is the one that applies to credit card purchases, while the others have to do with other transactions. INTEREST RATES AND INTEREST CHARGES Purchase Annual Percentage Rate (APR) 16.24% to 23.24%, based on your creditworthiness. These APRs will vary with the market based on the Prime Rate. Balance Transfer APR 16.24% to 23.24%, based on your creditworthiness. These APRs will vary with the market based on the Prime Rate. Cash Advance APR 25.24%. This APR will vary with the market based on the Prime Rate. Overdraft Advance APR 25.24%. This APR will vary with the market based on the Prime Rate. How does Chase Sapphire calculate its credit card APR rates? It uses the U.S. prime rate as of December 22, 2015, which was set at 3.5%. According to Chase, â€Å"We add 12.74% to 19.74% to the Prime Rate to determine the Purchase/Balance Transfer APR...We add 21.74% to the Prime Rate to determine the Cash Advance/Overdraft Advance APR.† As with many other lenders, Chase sets its own margin and adds this margin to the prime rate. Then, it assigns APRs based on the creditworthiness of each individual. Again, credit card APR might not come into play if you pay your balance off in full from month to month. It’s still important to know what you’re signing up for, though, just so you understand the costs that you can incur from using a credit card. In closing, let’s go over the key points you need to remember about APR, including what it is and how you can use it to decide between loans, mortgages, or credit cards. Some credit cards have a floating APR that fluctuate along with the prime rate. APR: Just the Basics APR, or annual percentage rate, works a little differently on loans than it does on credit cards. Thus came up a pressing need for a paradigm shift in the governments agricultural policy to address the problems faced in the agricultural sector in the new domestic and global economic environment and avenues to enhance the income of the farmers. The possible solution for meliorating the agro sector is Diversification. This study traces the d efinition of diversification, area expansion problems, immediate needs, and its future prospects. Diversification can also involve a shift of resources from one crop (or livestock) to a larger mix of crops and livestock, keeping in view the varying nature of risks and expected returns from each crop/livestock activity, and adjusting in such a way that it leads to optimum portfolio of income (Joshi, et al, 2003). It is a way of a gradual movement from subsistence staple food crops towards diversified market-oriented crops which have a larger potential for land returns. DOA being a strategy would open up opportunities, to a large extent, for value addition in agriculture and will also lead to better crop planning and improve the earning opportunities in the farm community. In India, Andhra Pradesh has been proactive in taking up agricultural diversification as a strategy to accelerate the growth of agriculture. Crop Diversification Crop diversification takes into account the economic returns from different value-added crops. It also implies the effective use of environmental as well as human resources to grow a mix of crops with complementary marketing opportunities, and it entails shifting of resources from low value crops to high value crops. Due to globalization, crop diversification in agriculture is also a means to increase the total crop productivity in terms of quality, monetary and quantity value under specific, diverse agro-climatic situations all over the world. There are two approaches to crop diversification in agriculture. Horizontal diversification the primary approach to crop diversification used in production agriculture. In this approach, diversification normally takes place through crop intensification which means adding new high-value crops to existing cropping systems as a way of improving the overall productivity of a particular farm or a regions farming economy as a whole. Vertical diversification approach in which value is added to the products by farmers through various methods such as processing, regional branding, packaging, merchandising, or other efforts to enhance the product. Technology-related factors which includes seeds, fertilizers and water technologies, but also those related to marketing, harvest, storage, agro-processing, distribution, logistics, etc. Household-related factors which includes regional food traditions, fodder and fuel as well as the labor and investment capacity of farm people and their communities. Institutional and Infrastructure-related factors which includes farm size, location and tenancy arrangements, research, in-field technical support, marketing systems and government regulating policies, etc. All these five factors are interrelated. Area expansion problems under rice and wheat crops Scaling up production area poses several new problems of significance such as: 1. Excessive use of groundwater leading to poor water use efficiency and depletion of groundwater. 2. Deterioration of soil health or soil fertility. 3. Multiple infestations of weed flora, insect pests and diseases. 4. Indiscriminate use of energy such as chemical, electricity or disease, etc. 5. Reduction in the availability of other protective food and high value crops. 6. Pollution of agro-ecosystems. Despite the expansion problems, crop diversification has the potential to be an economic driver in agricultural regions. It may prove to become the paramount importance in meeting challenges that arise from a post-green revolution scenario. In view of shrinkage of agricultural land and operational holdings due to expansion of urban centers, changes in consumer food habits, exponential population growth rate, farmers are pressured to include or substitute additional crops in to the cropping system. Key Drivers Of Diversification The key drivers of diversification that are identified are : (1) Food Security; (2) Employment generation through creation of off-farm and non-farm investment opportunities within the capabilities of the resource-poor farmers; (3) Changes in crop patterns and farming systems; (4) More effective use of land and water resources; (5) Market access initiatives replacing risk aversion with risk acceptance; (6) Changing consumer demands irrespective of the nature of habitation and standards of living due to spread-effect of health consciousness caused by the visual media and non-discriminatory demand for quality goods, and (7) The role of urbanization in fast developing countries like India. Crop diversification can better tolerate the ups and downs in the market value of farm products and may ensure economic stability for farming families of the country. The adverse effects of aberrant weather, such as erratic and scanty rainfall and drought are very common in a vast area in agricultural production of the country. Incidence of flood in one part of the country and drought in the other part is a very frequent phenomenon in India. Under these aberrant weather situations, dependence on one or two major cereals (rice, wheat, etc.) is always risky. Hence, crop diversification through substitution of one crop or mixed cropping/inter-cropping may be a useful tool to mitigate problems associated with aberrant weather to some extent, especially in the arid and semi-arid drought-prone/dry land areas. Immediate Need In India, crop diversification in agriculture takes place vertically or horizontally, depending upon the market forces and also occasionally due to the domestic needs. With regards to use of land and water use and quality, there is an immediate need to consider the following factors (Aradhana , 2009): Farm produce processing into value added products will offer employment scope in non-farm works as in distillation of active ingredients from medicinal and aromatic plants (herbal products), scope of industrialization in agriculture for sugar, paper board manufacturing, etc. There is a need to find place-based approaches for diversifying the farming situations under various socio-economic conditions, infrastructure of market, domestic needs, supply of inputs, etc. The research and development on crop diversification is best done in a farmer-participatory mode where a multi-disciplinary team consisting of scientists will involve farmers from the project planning phase till arriving at conclusions and solutions. The concept of sustainable productivity for each land and water units through crop diversification needs to be fostered. There is critical need for promoting co-operatives in rural areas to solve micro-level and demographic problems. Strengthening food processing and other value-added industries in rural areas is a means to provide employment to rural youth. Alternate cropping systems and farm enterprise diversification are most important for environment protection. There are abundant opportunities in adopting the subsidiary occupations to the rice-wheat cropping systems present in India. They are vegetable farming, fruit cultivation, floriculture, medicinal and aromatic plants cultivation, mushroom farming, dairying, piggery, goatery, poultry and duckery, fishery or aquaculture, bee-keeping, to provide ample scope for diversification of rice-wheat cropping system in north-western and south India and north-eastern states. Farm enterprise diversification will generate more income opportunities and rural employment round the year. Conclusion Diversification in agriculture will have a tremendous impact on the agro-socio-economic areas and also in the uplifting of resource-inadequate farming communities. It will be able to generate income and employment opportunities for rural youth around the year for the utmost benefits of the Indian farmers. It shows the use of local resources in a bigger mix of diversified cropping systems and livestock, aquaculture and other non-farm sectors in the rural areas. As in the WTO era along with the globalization of markets, diversification in agriculture is an ace means to step up the total production and productivity with respect to quality, quantity and monetary benefits under diverse agro-climatic state of affairs in the country. There are still numerous opportunities for crop diversification present in both- irrigated and non-irrigated vast areas in the rural India.
